The town works when it behaves like a character with its own memory. It remembers who dated whom at seventeen and it has not updated the file. That pressure is what makes an ordinary gesture (being seen leaving at seven in the morning) carry more weight than a declaration would anywhere else.
Real details make it: the particular shop, the drive between two places, the neighbour who always comments. Those are what separate a small town from a set.
